At the practice of Dr. Maria Ana Marcelo, a family dentist in Etobicoke, we believe that even our smallest patients should learn about the importance of good dental health.
When kids understand why they should take care of their teeth, they are generally more involved in daily brushing and flossing. There are also less arguments at bedtime when it’s time to take out the toothpaste, toothbrush and floss. That’s why it’s so important that they regularly visit an Etobicoke family dentist.
At our welcoming dental practice, we provide your child with dental education that will hopefully make your job as a parent easier. We help your child understand that brushing and flossing are important responsibilities and will keep their teeth and gums healthy.
Below are a few suggestions to help your child develop a healthy relationship with dental care:
Talk to your child about the importance of keeping their teeth strong and healthy. Explain how sugar is in food and drinks, and that if it isn’t brushed and flossed away it can stick to your teeth.
Brush and floss in front of your children, and show them how to do it properly so that they will learn to do it all by themselves. We recommend letting the child brush their own teeth, and then doing a “touch-up” afterwards to make sure they are clean.
Try and keep all conversations about going to the dentist light and positive. Children need to see that going to the dentist is no big deal. Don’t say things like “It’s not scary,” or “You shouldn’t be afraid,” because that can put the idea in their head that something could be scary.
If you visit our Kids Zone section, you will find lots of exciting and interactive videos, games and colouring pages. They will help you educate your kids about the basics of dental hygiene in a fun way.
